E. Malcolm Martinez writesCHIRP Radio Welcomes Mark Lanegan to The Old Town School of Folk Music on Thursday, October 10th!

One of the most unique voices in music comes to Chicago as Mark Lanegan, formerly of The Screaming Trees, Queens Of The Stone Age, and The Gutter Twins, takes the stage at The Old Town School Of Folk Music (4544 N. Lincoln Ave) on October 10th at 8pm.

As a founder and lead singer of The Screaming Trees in the Pacific Northwest of the late 80s, Lanegan’s gruff yet heartbroken voice earned the band some distinction on the local scene. And although their music never quite aspired to the “grunge” sound that their Seattle contemporaries perfected they did benefit from the rise of that scene in the early '90s. Their 1992 single ”Nearly Lost You” became a hit on alternative radio after being featured in Cameron Crowe’s film Singles of the same year.

After the band’s break-up in 2000, Lanegan has collaborated with numerous artists, as well as releasing four solo albums of his own, on top of the four solo albums he released in the '90s while still with the Trees. His latest, Imitations, a collection of cover songs, was released on September 17th.

You can watch a new video on Lanegan’s website, marklanegan.com.

Kyle Whelliston writesCHIRP Radio Welcomes Young Galaxy to Schubas on Thursday, October 10th!

On Thursday, October 10, CHIRP welcomes Montreal-based indie pop band Young Galaxy to Schubas at the corner of Belmont and Southport. The band is touring behind their fourth LP Ultramarine (Paper Bag Records), released back in April. It's a disc full of big pop melodies, dreamy synth washes, and the husky alto vocals of Catherine McCandless. You might have heard them on CHIRP lately, with tracks off the new album like "Fall For You" or "In Fire."

If you've become smitten with the new Chvrches album over the past couple of weeks, or if you've had Washed Out, London Grammar and/or Pure Bathing Culture in your regular 2013 rotation, you'll want to check out this show. Arrive early, so you can catch the support set from Chicago native Mister Lies. He'll play gentle, fragile pop soundscapes supported by sparse bass that's big and booming enough to reverberate that old harp-like wooden arch over the Schubas stage.

Please note that the show is 21+. Show starts at 9 PM, tickets cost just $12 - bring a friend.

Mike Bennett writesFriday iPod/MP3 Shuffle—Happy Birthday Jody Stephens Edition

Today, let’s pay tribute to the drummer of the legendary cult power pop band Big Star. Jody Stephens was the only main stay, other than Alex Chilton, for every iteration of the band. And Jody brought some skills to the table. His work on “Oh My Soul” alone is enough to show how skilled he was, and he certainly influenced future drummers (I would guess Will Rigby of The dB’s learned a thing or two from those first two Big Star records). Jody helps keep the Big Star flame burning and works at Ardent Studios, where the band’s classic albums were recorded. I’d reckon if you stop by there when he was in, if he wasn’t recording some band, he’d probably show you around. Let’s salute Mr. Stephens by grabbing your iPod or MP3 player, hitting shuffle and sharing the first 10 songs that come up.

Kyle Whelliston writesRediscovering Our Record Collections: “Slanted and Enchanted” by Pavement

None of us get to choose when we turn 19 years old, that magical year when we're free from mandatory schooling, (hopefully) out of the house, and unburdened from the requirement to ask permission for the opportunity to enter the difficult matrix of actions and consequences. Nineteen hundred and ninety-one, I guess, was as good a time as any. That was "the year that punk broke", as some still call it, a major before-after landmark in the history of rock.
